The Slow Tortoise's Little Concert

Tum, tum, tum. You're invited to a forest concert where everyone's sound belongs.

What Will It Sound Like?

Listen closely to the fast sounds and the slow ones. What music could they make together?

Duri's Little Wish

The forest friends were getting ready for a concert. Duri the tortoise arrived with a little drum. “I'd like to play with you, too.” His voice was quiet, but clear.

Tum, Tum, Tum

Duri tapped his drum in the shade of a tree. Tum, tum, tum. Even the grass swayed to the slow, even notes. Duri liked his beat.

Practice Runs Too Fast

But Rabbit's bells and Fox's wooden sticks moved very quickly. By the time Duri had tapped his drum once, his friends' sounds had already raced far ahead.

Trying to Catch Up

Duri hurried his drumming and lost the beat. “Maybe my sound is too slow.” During a break, he rested his hands on the drum. He still wanted to play together.

After the Rain

That afternoon, a shower swept through the forest. When it stopped, one side of the wooden stage had tilted. The friends put down their instruments and gathered by the wet boards.

All at Different Times

“Let's lift it together!” Rabbit lifted first, and Fox pushed too late. The board clattered again. Everyone was trying hard, but they were moving at different times.

Duri's Beat

Duri sat on a low log and sounded his drum. Tum, tum, tum. “Shall we lift slowly, in time with this?” His friends waited for his next note.

Moving at the Same Time

Tum, get ready. Tum, lift together. Tum, set it down gently. Little by little, their movements matched. Rabbit smiled. “Your beat makes it easier to work together!”

A Stage Mended Together

Rabbit gathered the light boards, and Fox straightened the tilted support. Duri's steady beat joined their movements together. With all three checking the work, the stage stood level again.

A New Way to Play

They began to practice again. Rabbit's clear bells rang between Duri's tum, tum, and Fox's lively taps danced along. The fast sounds and the slow sounds found room for one another.

The Forest Concert

As the sun sank low, the forest animals gathered in front of the stage. Duri sounded the first beat, and Rabbit and Fox answered with smiles. Their music spread through the branches.

Everyone's Sound

When the last note faded, warm applause filled the air. Duri and his friends bowed side by side. He did not have to play the fastest. Three friends listening to one another made all the music they needed.

Let's Talk Together

How did Duri's slow beat help his friends? Think of something you could do together using your different strengths.

Together for the Next Beat

The little concert is over. Listen at your own pace. There is still so much music to make together.
